Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss

A favorite classic of students that can be used across a much broader age range than expected! Written on a dare to create a story using only 50 words, older students are given that same dare. Great for choral reading, practice in expressionism, writing, and word sorting.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle

From an educator's perspective, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, is my favorite Eric Carle book. Early elementary children find this book engaging and enthusiastically perform choral reading. The content lends itself to thematic learning and can be utilized across the curriculum: ELA, science and health, mathematics, art, and social studies.

Mechanically Inclined: Building Grammar, Usage, and Style into Writer's Workshop - Jeff Anderson

Recommended to all elementary teachers and ELA/English teachers for middle school and up. While the recommended ages are for use with students 9-13 years, I have used materials and activities starting with 4th graders through 12th grade. As an introduction, for mastery, or review. The activities are engaging and quick-write rules a must have. Used daily as the inspiration in quick-write activities which demonstrated significant, rapid growth in students' writing and during grammar instruction.
